Nun haben wir die Richtung nach Norden eingeschlagen. Aber wer weiß…! Eine kurze Pause mussten wir in einer Werkstatt einlegen, um unseren schleichenden Plattfuß vorne rechts flicken zu lassen. Schon eine halbe Stunde später, bei „free Soda und TV“, ging es wieder auf Tour.
Nach Salt Lake City sind wir eine Minidistanz durch Idaho gefahren und haben diesen Bundesstaat nur im äußersten Osten gestreift. Der Highway #89 ging auf 2500 Meter hoch und nur leicht herunter zum Bear Lake. Wunderbar um einen Badestopp einzulegen!!
Auf der folgenden Suche nach einem schönen Übernachtungsplatz sahen wir ein Hinweisschild zu einer Höhle. Und um unsere Neugier zu befriedigen fuhren wir am nächsten Morgen die 10 Meilen in die Berge zur Minnetonka Cave. Eine Führung durch diese war fantastisch und wir staunten über Stalagtiten und Stalagniten. Das wir fast 1 ½ Stunden in der Höhle waren, haben wir kaum gemerkt. Lediglich daran, dass unsere Füße und Beine halb erfroren waren. Wie Carla bemerkte: „Hier ist es ieeeesekahle!“ Das widerum konnten wir unserem Guide nur annähernd übersetzten… Uns wurde allerdings plötzlich warm, sogar mit einem ordentlichen Adrenalinschub versehen, als der Generator ausfiel und das Licht ausging. Henning stand bereit zum Treppe heruntersteigen auf der obersten glitschigen Stufe und ich konnte ihn zum Glück gerade noch am Arm packen! Noch einmal gut gegangen.
Ein paar Kilometer weiter waren wir dann in Wyoming und fuhren entlang des Snake Rivers durch landwirtschaftlich geprägtes Gebiet. Bei einem Stopp, bzw. Übernachtungsplatz waren Henning und Mario besonders mutig und wollten es (endlich) wissen: Kann man die Campingkabine vom Pickup trennen und wie funktioniert es? Also ran an die Arbeit! Diese hat ca. 20 Minuten gedauert und die Kabine stand auf ihren 4 Beinen, zwar wackelig, aber ohne fahrbaren Unterbau da! Meine Aufgabe war es, die Bewachung zu übernehmen, während der Rest der Familie eine Spritztour im Truck ins nächste Dorf unternahm. Das war wohl der eigentliche Sinn des Unterfangens: mal mit einem V8 durch die Lande zu cruisen und zu testen/hören, was er kann. Sollte mir recht sein, denn als Überraschung haben sie Eis für alle von der Tanke mitgebracht!
Im Westen Wyomings schlängelten wir uns nach Norden zum Grand Teton Nationalpark. Den Alpen sehr ähnlich, erwarteten uns dort wunderbare Ausblicke auf teils schneebedeckte Berge und satte Wiesen und Wälder. Beste Ausgangslage für eine Wanderung um den Jenny Lake und einer Bootsfahrt zurück zum Ausgangspunkt. Letzteres war für die Kinder definitiv das Highlight!
