DREI STÄDTE UND EIN BERG
Stadt Nummer 1: Vancouver
Mit dem Camper fuhren wir nicht in die Stadt hinein, sondern hatten uns schon vorher entschieden, North Vancouver als Basis zu benutzen. Dort fanden wir einen schönen Spielplatz (!) mit entsprechender Übernachtungs-Parkmöglichkeit. Der Deal mit unseren Kindern hieß „zwei Stunden Spielplatz gegen einen Tag Stadtbesichtigung“… Nein, nein, solche Verabredungen sind gar nicht nötig, denn die beiden machen auch ohne Verhandlungen alles gut mit und sind außerdem gespannt, was es in den Städten so alles zu entdecken gibt. Zudem es an solchen Tagen meist Fast Food mit Sprite oder Fanta gibt!!!
Vom Longsdale Quay in North Vancouver nutzten wir den SeaBus, um nach Downtown Vancouver zu fahren. Dieser fährt 12 Minuten über das Burrard Inlet und bietet bereits einen tollen Blick auf die Skyline. Wir waren überrascht, wie gut dieses Wassertransportmittel angenommen wird, immerhin war es Sonntag Vormittag! Beim näheren Beobachten der Mitfahrenden erblickten wir teils bunte Verkleidungen, Blumen und angemalte Gesichter- alles in den Regenbogenfarben der Homosexuellenbewegung. Was war wohl los in Vancouver? Eine Parade mit dem Thema: „Proud to be…“ sollte uns erwarten! Nach einem kurzen Spaziergang auf der Uferpromenade, bogen wir in Richtung der Innenstadt ab. Die Orientierung war aufgrund der Straßenanordnung im Schachbrettmuster sowieso recht einfach, doch nun brauchten wir einfach nur den Massen zu folgen. Und schon standen wir am Straßenrand um den vorbeiziehenden Fußgruppen und Wagen zuzuschauen. Was für eine riesige Party! Für Henning und Carla war es auch ein großes Fest, denn von Sonnenbrillen über Wasserbälle bis Glitzerketten wurden zahlreiche Dinge verteilt, die unseren Rucksack ordentlich füllten. Die Schnucketüte (nordhessisch für Süßigkeiten), die von der Parade zum Unabhängigkeitstag am 4. Juli gerade aufgefuttert war, war nach dieser Parade übrigens wieder doppelt so voll!
Nach diesem Erlebnis schlenderten wir noch etwas durch die Stadt und fuhren am Abend mit dem Katamaran des SeaBus wieder zurück in unser „Quartier“. Seltsamerweise waren die Kinder noch nicht müde, um nicht noch eine Runde auf dem Spielplatz zu spielen. Im Gegensatz zu Mario und mir!
Die Zeit in Kanada ging zu Ende und der Grenzübergang zurück in die USA kam so schnell (!), dass wir gar nicht mehr unser restliches Obst und Gemüse aufessen konnten. Schade, irgendwie falsch geplant, denn alle frischen und tierischen Lebensmittel, die nicht ihre Herkunft in den USA haben, dürfen nicht eingeführt werden. Ein paar Äpfel, Kartoffeln und Limetten wurden ohne unser Beisein beim Inspizieren des Campers aussortiert, doch das Feuerholz, die angefangene Packung Schinken und Käse durfte mitgenommen werden. Die Grenzbeamten waren alle sehr freundlich und der Erste von ihnen wurde nicht müde, uns von seiner Zeit beim Militär in Fulda und Schweinfurth zu erzählen.
Stadt Nummer 2: Seattle
Die Interstate #5 wurde immer größer und aus zwei Fahrspuren wurden nach und nach fünf bis sechs Spuren. Das bedeutete, daß die nächste Stadt, die wir besichtigen wollten immer näher kam! Wir fassten den Plan, diesmal direkt nach Downtown zu fahren: Downtown Seattle.
Der Bericht von 2007 heißt auf unserer Website „Schlaflos in Seattle“, da wir damals mit Sterling (eine Reisebekanntschaft von Island 2001) ein wenig das Nachtleben erkundet haben. Diesmal könnte der Titel „Parkplatzlos in Seattle“ lauten und Sterling wäre wieder beteiligt gewesen. Zumindest indirekt. Denn obwohl er zur Zeit nicht zu Hause war und es auch bedauert hat, dass er uns nicht willkommen heißen konnte, hatten wir uns einen Parkplatz bei ihm vor dem Haus erhofft. Doch inzwischen standen auch in seinem Viertel Verbots- und 2-Stunden-Parkschilder, sodass wir nach mehreren Runden die Suche dort aufgaben.
In Chinatown wurden wir schließlich fündig und begrüßten es, dass neben den ausgewiesenen „small car“ Parkplätzen auch ein paar für die Größe unseres Campers bereitstanden. Auf Small Car trifft in den USA aber immer noch die Größe eines BMW Kombi zu! Vom Hunger getrieben gab es diesmal kein Fast Food einer bekannten Kette, sondern lecker Nudeln mit Gemüse und Fleisch im Chinarestaurant. Mit Fanta und Sprite, natürlich!
Anschließend suchten wir den Columbia Tower auf, da man dort in der 40. Etage bei Starbucks Kaffee trinken kann. Höher ging es in dem Hochhaus natürlich noch, doch der Überblick von dieser Höhe war auch schon super. Vor allem auch der Blick auf die gegenüberliegende Baustelle, ebenfalls im 40. Stock!
Und Starbucks gehört zu Seattle: 1971 eröffnete am Pike Place der Originalladen, der heutzutage in Asien und Europa genauso bekannt ist, wie in Amerika.
Der wuselige und quirlige Pike Place Market war dann unser nächstes Ziel und wir ließen uns durch die Marktstände treiben. So auch durch die weiteren Straßen von Downtown bis wir zurück am Camper waren. Der Tag war lang und anstrengend gewesen und so suchten wir den nächsten Walmart in Federal Way zum Übernachten auf und es bedurfte diesmal keiner weiteren Spielzeit bis die Kinder im Alkoven die Augen schlossen.
Der Berg: Mount Rainier
Nach den Stadttagen sehnten wir uns wieder nach Natur und entschieden in den Mount Rainier Nationalpark zu fahren. Dieser von Gletschern bedeckte Gipfel des Mount Rainier ist mit 4392 Meter der siebthöchste Berg der USA und sah im Sonnenschein mit blauen Himmel einfach beeindruckend schön aus. Nach der Ankunft am Spätnachmittag war es für eine Wanderung zu spät und so konzentrierten wir uns auf unser Grillen! Lecker, vor so einer Kulisse. Dafür haben wir am nächsten Morgen die Wanderschuhe geschnürt und sind einen kleinen Trail gegangen. Inmitten vieler Wildblumen in den herrlichsten Farben genossen wir den Ausblick auf das schneebedeckte Wahrzeichen von Washington State.
Stadt Nummer3: Portland
Laut Reiseführer ist Portland eine der neuen „IN“-Städte der USA und besitzt eine blühende Kunst-, Restaurant-, Kaffee- und Kneipenszene. Das war für uns allerdings nicht der Grund für das Aufsuchen der Stadt. Wir folgten einer Einladung. Im Frühjahr diesen Jahres hatten wir Eric und Jill einen Mercedes G vermittelt und in die USA verschifft. Die beiden kannten wir bis dato nicht persönlich, sondern hatten den Kontakt über Alan erhalten. Eigentlich zur Suche eines Campers, als wir noch Nachforschungen betrieben. Die beiden Mercedes G und VW-Bulli-Fans mit ihren drei Jungs luden uns also zu sich nach Portland ein und „here we are“! Der G war auch seit einer Woche da, denn nach seiner Ankunft musste er in einer Werkstatt zunächst auf die amerikanischen Normen und Meilentacho umgerüstet werden. Jetzt war er angemeldet und Eric war sichtlich zufrieden und glücklich mit dem Kauf. Und wir freuten uns für ihn!
Wir freuten uns außerdem, mal wieder in richtigen Betten zu schlafen und schlugen das Angebot nicht aus, für das Besuchswochenende im Haus unter zu kommen. Am Samstag erkundeten wir Portland und empfanden die Atmosphäre dort als sehr angenehm. Der Farmers Market, eine überschaubare Innenstadt, die riesige Buchhandlung Powell´s und das Flanieren am Willamette River gehörten zum Tagesprogramm. Am Spätnachmittag holte uns Eric wieder ab und eröffnete uns, dass es kein Dinner zu Hause gäbe, sondern wir zu einer Party eingeladen wären. Jill und Eric hatten den halben Tag schon bei dem Sommerfest verbracht und sollten uns auf jeden Fall mitbringen. Von uns aus gerne und so verbrachten wir den Abend bei dem Chef von Jill im Haus am See mit eigenem Anlegesteg, Motorboot und allem drum und dran. Kinder waren leider keine mehr da, aber Henning und Carla wussten sich mit den ganzen Schwimmutensilien auch auf dem Rasen zu beschäftigen und feierten ihre eigene Party.
