BAJA CALIFORNIA
Von der kleinen Hafenstadt Topolobampo, im Süden von Los Mochis gelegen, sind wir mit der Nachtfähre auf die Baja California gefahren. Da wir uns keine Kabine genommen hatten, mussten wir mit den unbequemen Stühlen des Restaurants vorlieb nehmen, doch nichts desto trotz kamen wir ausgeruht am nächsten Morgen in La Paz an. Bevor wir dort das Hafengelände verlassen durften, wurde der „G“ und auch alle anderen Fahrzeuge mal wieder intensiv vom Militär durchsucht und wir durften Zeugen einer Drogen-Hunde-Übung im LKW vor uns werden. Der Fahrer hat auch nicht schlecht geschaut.
La Paz ist die Hauptstadt der Baja California Sur (Süd) und das Ziel vieler Urlauber aus den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada. Und so bekamen wir auch schon einen kleinen Eindruck von Nordamerika, da La Paz nicht mehr das typische Aussehen einer mexikanischen Stadt hatte. Überhaupt ist die Baja California begehrtes Urlaubsziel der Nordamerikaner.
Vor rund 20 Millionen Jahren wurde die Baja im Zuge der Kontinentalverschiebung vom mexikanischen Festland abgetrennt und ragt nun als ca.1300 Kilometer lange Halbinsel in den Pazifik. Die höchste Erhebung weist immerhin 3095 Meter auf und der größte Teil des fast menschenleeren Gebietes besteht aus Geröll- und Sandwüste. So war es für uns leicht, dem Touristentrubel zu entgehen, obwohl sowieso noch keine Saison war, und die herrlichsten Plätze an einsamen Stränden zu finden. Ob eine kurze Badepause im glasklaren Wasser oder Spaziergänge am Strand, hier ließen wir uns nach der ganzen Fahrerei auf dem Festland mal wieder richtig Zeit und genossen die sagenhafte Natur.
Auf der Mex 1 „arbeiteten“ wir uns langsam nach Norden, vorbei an den verschiedensten Kakteenarten, für die die Baja bekannt ist. Von 120 Kakteenarten soll es hier allein 50 geben, darunter ein bis zu 25 Meter hoher eingliedriger Riesekaktus- da sieht der „G“ winzig gegen aus…und Mario auch!!!
