Die Küstenstraße entlang zu fahren, trauten wir uns aufgrund eventueller Ampeln und Kreuzungen nicht, da dies immer in einem Abenteuer endet und wir Glück haben, wenn wir mit zwei Grünphasen herüber kommen.
Das Fahren macht deshalb keinen Spaß, doch wir haben uns dadurch das Sightseeing nicht verderben lassen und uns auf den Besuch im Aquarium von Monterey gefreut. Die Imitation der Meereslebensräume vor der kalifornischen Küste ist dort sehr gelungen und bei der Vielzahl an Meeresbewohnern, Informationen und Demonstrationen blieben wir den ganzen Vormittag im Aquarium.
Schließlich war es an der Zeit Alan aufzusuchen, der in einem Vorort von San Francisco wohnt und uns besagte Einladung ausgesprochen hatte. Nach einer weiteren Stunde Fahrt erreichten wir das Wohnviertel und auf den letzten 250 Meter verweigerte der „G“ die Fahrt. Der Motor ging aus, wir standen direkt auf der Kreuzung und nichts ging mehr. Schnell von der Fahrbahn geschoben, ließen wir das Auto mit dem eingeschalteten Warnlicht stehen und machten uns zu Fuß auf die Suche nach Alan´s Haus. Dieser war natürlich sehr überrascht, uns so kommen zu sehen und zögerte nicht lange, uns mit seinem „G“ abzuschleppen.
Kurze Zeit später standen wir bei den Nachbarn auf dem Hof, da diese gerade im Urlaub waren und so für uns Platz war, und die Männer fingen mit der Diagnose an. Bis tief in die Nacht wurde getestet und probiert und auch in den nächsten Tagen ging die Fehlersuche weiter. Nicht nur am „G“ wurde gearbeitet, sondern auch am Telefon, um nachzuforschen, ob sich denn nicht doch irgendeine Werkstatt mit unserem Modell auskennen würde. Leider ohne Erfolg. Wir sind im Land der Benzinmotoren!
Aber Alan ist fast wie eine Werkstatt und wir können froh sein, dass wir es bis zu ihm geschafft haben, er sich so gut auskennt und uns so nett aufgenommen hat!
Auch die Familie hat sich gefreut, uns kennen zu lernen und wir wurden sofort herzlich integriert. Ob beim Pasta-Essen in der gerade in Renovierungsarbeiten befindlichen Küche, beim Lagerfeuer im Garten oder wenn Mario beim Renovieren helfen kann. Die abendlichen Spaziergänge mit Andrew, einem von zwei Söhnen und Bingo, dem Hund, sind auf jeden Fall Pflicht und machen viel Spaß. Zur Erkundung der Gegend sind wir auf die Fahrräder umgestiegen und kommen so auch ganz gut vorwärts- wenn auch nur im Kreis!
