Mit Blick auf die Landkarte haben wir gesehen, dass wir auf unserem Weg nach Osten immer weiter dem Freeway I-90 folgen würden und haben spontan beschlossen, die Reisegeschwindigkeit um 10 km/h zu erhöhen. Wir sind die ganze Zeit über immer recht gemütlich unterwegs gewesen, doch bei der Durchquerung von South Dakota, Minnesota und Wisconsin haben wir mit nun 100 km/h so richtig Gas gegeben! So sind wir durch die Kornkammer der USA „geflogen“ und waren drei Tage später schon in Illinois und der Metropole Chicago.
Im Volksmund wird die Stadt auch „Windy City“ genannt, was zum einen auf den oft starken Wind von Michigansee zurückgeht, der durch die Wolkenkratzerschluchten kanalisiert wird und zum anderen auf die Korruption und historische weit verbreitete organisierte (Schmuggler-) Kriminalität.
Nachdem wir zügig ins Zentrum gefunden hatten, hatten wir ebenfalls Glück mit der Parkplatzsuche und ein 24 Stunden-Parkplatz sollte auch sogleich unser Schlafplatz für eine Nacht werden. Umrahmt von den vielen Hochhäusern sah der G wirklich winzig aus! Und wir fühlten uns auch winzig, als wir im folgenden durch die Innenstadt Chicagos spazierten. Erinnerungen an einen Schüleraustausch vor 15 Jahren kamen auf und ich konnte die Stadtführung übernehmen. Die drittgrößte Stadt der USA mit 2,8 Millionen Einwohnern bietet im Zentrum eine großartige Ansammlung von Architektur, was bei den Wolkenkratzern um 1900 beginnt, bis zum Bau des 1974 fertig gestellten Sears Tower geht und immer weiter vervollständigt wird. Den Sears Tower mit 452 Metern Höhe haben wir uns dann auch näher angeschaut und uns mit dem Lift in das 103. Stockwerk fahren lassen- in einer Minute. Bis 1998 war das Hochhaus das höchste Gebäude der Welt, wurde dann aber von einem Wolkenkratzer in Taipeh abgelöst.
Unsere Parkzeit haben wir mit Sightseeing ordentlich ausgenutzt und uns kurz vor Ablauf wieder auf den Freeway gegeben.
