Nach Kalifornien, Nevada und Arizona überschritten wir die Landesgrenze nach Utah. Mit Spitznamen „The Beehieve State“. Dem Bienenstockstaat, welches wohl u.a. auf das emsige Arbeiten und Leben der Mormonen hindeutet.

Am Straßenrand des Highway #163 wies ein Schild auf den Gooseneck State Park hin und da wir uns mit der Strecke noch nicht befasst hatten, schauten wir mal, was es dort gab. Vom View Point aus blickte man tief hinunter auf die Doppel-Flusskehre des San Juan Rivers. Ein schöner Stopp! Die nächsten (Foto-) Stopps folgten auf der Dirt Road, die uns quasi am Fels entlang 800 Höhenmeter nach oben brachte. In ein anderes Landschaftsbild mit grün und größerem Buschwerk.

Aber auch wieder mit zahlreichen unterschiedlichen Felsformationen bis zu unserem nächsten Ziel: Dem Natural Bridge National Monument. Im Visitor Center schauten wir uns zunächst einen Film über die Entstehung dieser an und informierten uns über die Gegend. Die Kinder durften sich eine Trinkflasche aussuchen, die sie sogleich an der Wasserstation füllten. Diese Stationen gibt es überall; gutes System. Da wird mit einer tollen Flasche auch noch mehr getrunken! Die Neugierde trieb uns weiter und wir wollten natürlich die echten Brückenbögen sehen. Auf einem Scenic Drive mit verschiedenen Stopps entdeckten wir sie und waren begeistert. Laut Henning war es aber sehr schade, dass man nicht darüber gehen konnte! Dafür konnte man einen Spaziergang unter einen der Brückenbogen unternehmen. Und da wir zuvor mit einer anderen deutschen Familie mit zwei Mädchen (6 und 4 Jahre alt) in Kontakt gekommen waren, machte die Tour zusammen umso mehr Spaß.
Leider hatten tausend kleine Stechviecher auch viel Spaß, uns zu ärgern! Sie schwirrten ständig um uns herum und stachen bevorzugt in und um die Ohren. Ätzend! Die Nacht war dann entsprechend juckend…, aber auf einem wunderbaren „wilden“ Platz inmitten der roten Felsen. Sternenhimmel inklusive!
Den Lake Powell passierten wir im äußersten Osten und über Hite ging es nach Hanksville. Dort erhofften wir uns einen Supermarkt, da es auf der Landkarte als gering größerer Ort als Hite eingezeichnet war. Doch unser Einkauf musste mangels Supermarkt in der Tankstelle erledigt werden. Also nur das Nötigste: Popcorn und Soda, haha! Siehe Bild.
Am Fremont River entlang führte uns der Highway #24 in den Capitol Reef Nationalpark. Nach einem kurzen Überblick im Visitor Center fuhren wir den Scenic Drive bis in die Capital Gorge hinein. Teil des Waterpocket Folds, ein Faltengebirge, welches sich bis zum Lake Powell erstreckt. Über eine holprige Schotterpiste ging es durch die faszinierende, tief in den Fels geschnittene Schlucht. Einfach irre, dass wir nun einmal so tief „im“ Fels sein konnten. Eine Wanderung durch die noch enger werdende Schlucht intensivierte dieses Gefühl. Und als wir am Ende des Trails noch zu den mit Regenwasser gefüllten Wassertanks kraxeln mussten, war die Wanderung perfekt. Der Rückweg wurde Carla schließlich doch zu weit und Marios Schultern mussten herhalten…
Schon seit ein paar Tagen machte uns die Größe von Carlas Mandeln Sorgen. Sie äußerte zwar keine Symptome, aber wir wollten die Schwellung und Rötung gerne ärztlich abklären lassen. So suchten wir in Bicknell, kurz nach dem Capital Reef NP eine Klinik, bestehend aus Allgemeinmediziner, Zahnarzt und Apotheke auf. Dr. Bret Hilton war und ist wohl der einzige Arzt, den wir jemals in Cowboystiefeln im Dienst sehen werden! Jedoch war Freitag und ein Wochenende in Bicknell, um auf die Medizin zu warten, schien uns auch nicht verlockend. Also planten wir kurzfristig um und hielten das Medikament eine Stunde später in der Hand.
