MONUMENT VALLEY
Nach drei Tagen im Grand Canyon National Park, in denen wir ausgiebig den Busshuttle genutzt und kleinere Spaziergänge unternommen haben, haben wir den Park im Osten schließlich verlassen. Dort ging es durch heiße Wüstenlandschaft mit selbstgebauter Klimaanlage: wir halten einen nassen Waschlappen aus dem Fenster, eines der Kinder zählt bis 10 und dann tupfen wir die kalte Quelle an Stirn, Nacken, Arme oder wo es eben gut tut!
In der kleinen Ortschaft Mexican Hat brauchten wir keine Erklärung, woher der Name kommt: rechts der Straße stand ein auffälliges Steingebilde, welches an einen mexikanischen Sombrero erinnert. Witzig.
Solche und noch viel massivere Steingebilde erwarteten uns im Monument Valley. Die wohlbekannten Felsmonumente waren von der Straße aus schon bestens zu erblicken, doch bei der Fahrt auf dem Scenic Drive (Dirt Road/Gelände!) durch die Monolithen fühlten wir uns erst richtig wie im Western-Film! „Unser“ John Wayne schnappte sich sogleich sein Cowgirl und ritt dem Sonnenuntergang entgegen (siehe Bilder).
Das Monument Valley im übrigen gehört nicht zu den Nationalparks, sondern wird von den Navajo-Indianern verwaltet. So auch der „Ponyhof“, wie Carla so schön sagte, inmitten der Felsen. Neben dem kleinen Ausritt war dort ein am Morgen geborenes Fohlen ein weiteres Highlight! Und der Pool auf dem Campingplatz. Spontan entschieden wir uns, eine einen weiteren Tag dort zu bleiben und die Kinder waren froh, dass unsere Schweizer Nachbarn es genauso hielten. Sie waren mit zwei Kindern und Oma und Opa unterwegs und Henning organisierte immer zeitgleiche Schwimmzeiten!
Ein Auftrag für unseren „Fahrradfreund“ und Geologen Nick: da im Besucherzentrum des Monument Valleys die Entstehung der Monolithen nicht behandelt wurde, sondern eher die Geschichte der Indianer, erklärst du dich doch sicher bereit, dies zu übernehmen!!! Gastbeiträge/Kommentare willkommen…!

da kann ich natürlich gerne weiterhelfen.
Das Monument Valley entstand vor ca. 300 Mio. Jahren aus einem Tieflandbecken, das von Sedimenten aus den Rocky Mountains langsam verfüllt wurde. Dabei bildeten sich v.a. Kalk- und Sandsteine, wobei auch heute noch eine gewisse Schichtung erkennbar ist. Vor ca. 70 Mio. Jahren wurde das Gebiet durch plattentektonische Prozesse angehoben, wodurch das Colorado Plateau entstand. Seit diesem Anhebungsprozess trugen Wind, Wasser und die großen Temperaturunterschiede (Insolation) die abwechselnd weicheren und härteren Gesteinsschichten ab, bis nur noch die bekannten Felsnadeln und Tafelberge übrig blieben. Die rote Färbung des Sandsteins kommt dabei durch die bei der Verwitterung entstandenen Eisenoxide (quasi “rosten” die Gesteine durch Wasserkontakt). Diese Erosion findet auch heute noch statt, aber da diese Entwicklung sehr langsam vonstatten geht, bleiben sie auf jeden Fall noch einige Zeit erhalten.
