ROCKY MOUNTAINS
130 km westlich von Calgary liegt die Stadt Banff als Zentrum des Banff Nationalparks. Egal aus welcher Richtung kommend, landet man unweigerlich in der Stadt. Da bei unserer Ankunft das Wetter für andere Aktivitäten nicht besonders einladend war, flanierten auch wir bald der Banff Avenue entlang. Natürlich nicht allein, denn erstens ist Hoch- und Feriensaison in Kanada und zweitens regnete es bei den anderen Touristen natürlich auch! Der obligatorische Spielplatzbesuch durfte nicht fehlen und dann ging es weiter durch den Nationalpark.
Auch in den kanadischen Nationalparks ist das wilde Campen verboten und wir fanden Platz auf den Campingplätzen mit Selbstzahl-Briefumschlag-System. An einem Morgen, kurz nachdem wir gestartet waren, erblickten wir einen Schwarzbär! Zum Glück waren wir im Auto und konnten Meister Petz beim Fressen beobachten. An anderer Stelle stießen wir beim Spaziergang auf Bär- und Elchspuren. Henning und Carla sind bereits zu guten Fährtenlesern geworden und Mario und ich sind froh, wenigstens das Bärenspray griffbereit zu wissen. Wir haben es uns tatsächlich angewöhnt, es immer dabei zu haben- schließlich sind wir im Bear-Country!
Eine Wanderung am wunderschönen Lake Louise machte uns allen Spaß und da es viel geregnet hatte, hüpften die Kinder von Pfütze zu Pfütze und merkten so die gelaufenen Meter nicht…
Leider war es weiterhin sehr verregnet und die Wolken hingen tief. Die Gletscher des berühmten Icefield Parkways bis Jasper haben wir kaum gesehen. Schade.
Nach Jasper haben wir den Nationalpark verlassen und sind weiter in Richtung Westen gefahren.
Den Kindern haben wir „Fahrtage“ angekündigt und mit Hörspiel und Boardcatering versorgt, ging es ohne Murren die vielen Kilometer zunächst nach Prince George. Diese größere Stadt nutzten wir zum Auffüllen unseres Kühlschranks und den sonstigen notwendigen Sachen. Außerdem wollten wir noch einmal checken, ob wir tatsächlich den Platz auf der online gebuchten Fähre der Inside Passage von Prince Rupert nach Vancouver Island hatten. Das Telefonat brachte Ernüchterung: wir waren gebucht, allerdings nicht mit einem Camper, sondern nur mit normaler Autohöhe. Und nein, Kapazitäten für Überhöhe hätten sie nicht mehr!?! Das Angebot war eine Listung auf der Warteliste… Wir mussten aber an Ort und Stelle entscheiden, wo die Fahrt hinging, denn ohne einen Fährplatz sicher zu haben, wären wir nicht die 720 km nach Prince Rupert gefahren.
In diesen Fällen bin ich Marios Hartnäckigkeit dankbar. Er bat mich um weitere Anrufe und Nachfragen bei der Fährgesellschaft und beim dritten Mal hatte ich eine nette Dame an der Strippe, bei der Service groß geschrieben wurde. Kurzum: sie konnte uns zwei Tage früher auf einer Fähre einbuchen!
Also gingen die „Fahrtage“ nach Westen weiter und wir kamen in Vorfreude auf die Inside Passage in Prince Rupert an. Genug Zeit hatten wir dort eine alte Fischfabrik in Port Edward zu besichtigen, Weisskopfseeadler zu beobachten, einen Faulenztag auf dem Campingplatz zu verbringen und uns einen Wunsch zu erfüllen: einen Flug mit einem Wasserflugzeug! Als wir dann auch noch einen Buckelwal aus der Luft gesehen haben, war der Flug einfach perfekt und hat super Spaß gemacht.
