Ein ausgiebiges leckeres Frühstück bei Jill und Eric ließ den Tag gut beginnen und wir verabschiedeten uns von ihnen und Portland im Laufe des Vormittags. Außer dem Mercedes G (!) ließen wir die Kraxe dort und Eric wollte versuchen, sie für uns zu verkaufen. Nur einmal war sie in Gebrauch und Carla erklärte selbst ganz richtig, dass sie ja zu groß für die Kindertrage wäre. Und fügte stolz hinzu, wie gut sie wandern könne. Aha.
Die Fahrt führte uns zur Küste Oregons und in Tillamook erreichten wir sie. Der Ort ist bekannt für seine Cheese-Factory, doch Carla wollte als „Nicht-Käse-Esserin“ partout nicht dorthin. Dass außerdem noch Eiscreme hergestellt wird, war ihr egal… Für den Rest der Familie war der Besuch auch nicht so wichtig, denn wir wollten an das Meer. Und dieses hatten wir die nächsten 350 Meilen rechts von uns liegen. Das Meer und seine Bewohner: eines Morgens beim Frühstück erblickten wir sogar einen Grauwal!
In Waldport blieben wir für zwei Tage auf einem Campingplatz und badeten, spielten ausführlich auf dem Spielplatz und in den Dünen, grillten, wuschen Wäsche usw.. Und führten interessante Reise-und-über-Gott-und-die-Welt-Gespräche. Quasi von Camper zu Camper mit dem Unterschied, dass die meisten Camper dort mit den riesigen RV´s (Wohnmobile so groß wie Busse) unterwegs sind und wir im Gegensatz dazu ein Minifahrzeug haben.
Lediglich von Newport aus unternahmen wir einen Abstecher ins Landesinnere. Dort wollten wir Wein eines Winzers kaufen, den wir in 2007 kennengelernt hatten. Leider trafen wir niemanden auf dem Weingut an, doch in der nahe gelegenen Stadt Corvallis wurden wir im „Market of Choice“ fündig und gönnten uns eine Flasche. Den Besuch in Corvallis dehnten wir noch auf den nächsten Tag aus und gingen ins Schwimmbad. Denn kaum, dass wir uns 30 Meilen von der Küste entfernt hatten, stieg die Temperatur von angenehmen 25 Grad Celsius auf 36 Grad im Landesinneren an. Das Schwimmbad kam uns daher gelegen und wir planschten, rutschten und schwammen ein paar Stunden mit gefühlten 250 anderen Badegästen im kühlen Nass. Wie gesagt, es war heiß!
Ganz anders im Vergleich zur Küste. Als wir diese nach unserem Abstecher wieder erreichten, war es neblig und angenehm in der Temperatur. An dem einem Ort war es so stürmisch, dass der Sand uns am Strand ordentlich piekste oder an einem anderen Ort schön wärmte, als wir uns einbuddelten. So unterschiedlich wie die Temperaturen, bzw. Wetterlagen sind, sieht auch die Küste aus: tolle Sandstrände wechseln sich mit steilen Klippen ab oder mit felsigen Buchten.
Eine Überraschung für die Kinder, besonders Henning, gab es, als wir beschlossen in einen Dino-Park zu gehen. Wir versprachen uns mehr davon, aber die Kinder waren von dem kleinen Rundgang mit den Dinos begeistert. Für die 40 Dollar Eintrittsgeld gingen wir noch eine zweite Runde!
Überraschend war auch eine Aussage in Brookings auf dem Campingplatz: der Aufenthalt war nur Campingmobilen gestattet, die nicht älter als 10 Jahre sind. Aber da unser Camper in einem guten Zustand sei, durften wir einchecken!!! Na bravo, wir sind Baujahr 1992! Henning fand den Platz spitze, da er komplett betoniert und geteert war und er super Roller fahren konnte. Das war bestimmt verboten… Egal, da hat er den Laden mal aufgemischt!
Der Küstenstraße folgend befanden wir uns bald in Kalifornien und hatten dort die großen Redwood Bäume als Ziel. Lange mussten wir nicht suchen und fuhren in Crescent City einen Abstecher zum Humboldt Nationalpark, wo wir über die großen Baumriesen staunten. Eine Wanderung brachte uns noch näher an sie heran und wir ließen die Größe auf uns wirken.
Eher zufällig, da wir einen Platz für die Nacht suchten, fuhren wir in Richtung Ferndale und freuten uns am nächsten Morgen über einen Bummel in dem schönen viktorianischen Städtchen. Wir kehrten zum 2. Frühstück ein und ließen uns Pancake, Sandwich und Omelette in einem Restaurant mit der Einrichtung von 1965 schmecken.
Das nächste Ziel war kein Zufälliges, sondern eine Einladung nach Mendocino. Dort besitzen Opa Bill und Oma Donna ((!) die Nachbarn von Alan und Laurie) ein Ferienhaus und zusammen mit Alan, Laurie und Mark verbrachten wir alle das Wochenende dort.
Die Tage waren mit Erzählen, Essen, Spielen usw. gefüllt und auch mit dem Anschauen des Künstlerortes Mendocino. Ein Ausflug zum nahegelegenen Lighthouse am Cape Caprillo und nach Fort Bragg und dem Glas-Strand (um 1900 kippten sie ihren Müll über die Klippen in den Ozean und an dieser Stelle wurden die kaputten Flaschen vom Meer rund gewaschen, sodass zahlreiche Scherben noch heute den Strand säumen) rundete das Sightseeing-Programm ab. Und die Tage wurden mit Olympia abgerundet: ab 20 Uhr saßen wir alle vor dem Fernseher und verfolgten die Staffelläufe der schnellsten Damen und Herren der Welt. Bei Wein, Bier, Saft und Chips!!!
